Department Design 1: A special urban design course conducted by the Department of Urban Planning and Design focusing mainly on urban public space design with the help of invited lecturers and landscape designer consultants.
The course is a partly theoretical and partly practical course where students get acquainted with special issues and problems of public space definition, public spaces usage and public space design. In the design assignment all students deal with one area, where starting from the analysis of a greater urban entity we narrow down the design problems to handling the publicly attainable spaces in between buildings.

Urban Design 2. is the main practical course of the Department of Urban Planning and Design.
The design task: After the analysis of a bigger urban environment, the task is to prepare an urban design concept for a bigger urban unit and later develop it into an urban scaled architectural design (development plan).
The site of the design task is the same settlement or urban environment for all students - this oncoming spring semester it is the riversides of the Danube all the way inside the city limits of Budapest - since the studio work is accompanied by common site visits, lectures and project presentations, where the possibility to learn from each other is also an important factor.

Department’s Design Studios 1-2 focus on the development of analytical and technical skills for perceiving, understanding, and manipulating spatial definitions and relationships. During the semester a project is built up of two phases (Studio II. = architecture design of a public building and it’s close surrounding - based on the concept of Studio I. up to a 1:200/1:100 scale level). Tutors help to discover the influencing factors of a building design - regarding environmental, historical, engineering and technical aspects, thus the studios expose the student to a diversity of architectural issues, techniques and approaches to architecture and environment design. Training aspires to gain experience both of team-work and individual creation.

The goal of the course is to give foreign students coming to Budapest an overview of the current urban developments and at the same time help them to acquire a better understanding of the urban, architectural and cultural aspects of the city. The course starts with a short general overview of the historical development of Pest and Buda. Most in-class lectures nevertheless deal with current ongoing urban projects of the city, including urban renewal projects, housing estate renewals, new public spaces and new real estate developments. The lectures are followed by site visits, accompanied by specialists of various programmes. For fulfilling the requirements a small practical assignment has to be solved by the students individually.
